Orel Smalling

Elder Orel Smalling was born in Manchester, Jamaica, the first son and third child of Elise and Lebert Smalling, over 60 years ago. He received his education in Jamaica, where he trained as a welder before venturing to the United States in search of new opportunities.
From an early age, Orel was taught that God is the central force of life. This foundation instilled in him an unwavering love for God and ministry. This was first nurtured through the Youth for Christ Ministry at the United Church of Jamaica and Grand Cayman, where he served in the youth department. With the Lord ordering his steps, Orel migrated to the United States in 1989 and found a spiritual home at St. Paul Community Baptist Church in East New York, Brooklyn.
At St. Paul, Orel dedicated himself to ministry, serving on the Usher Board and in the ElDad Medad ministry. Over time, his calling deepened, leading him to become a “Man in Training” and eventually a long-serving member of the Elder Board, where he has faithfully ministered for over 30 years. As an elder, Orel embraced his role as a mentor, guiding young adults to navigate a society that often undervalues them as a people. Drawing from his own life experiences, he has become a pillar of principled male leadership, actively engaging in spaces where such guidance is needed.
An advocate for economic empowerment within the community, Orel uses his skills and trade to serve others. He donates his time repairing heating systems, providing plumbing services, and maintaining the homes of elderly community members who would otherwise struggle to afford these services. His impact extends beyond Brooklyn through his partnership with the Passion and Faith organization, delivering hospital beds, wheelchairs, and other essential supplies to those in need in his homeland, Jamaica.
Today, Orel continues to work as a welder and plumber by trade, while also fulfilling his roles as a devoted father of three to Sadé, Camille & Janine; a faithful husband to his God-given partner, Jacqueline, and a steadfast servant of God.
In recognition of his purpose-driven life, Elder Orel Smalling received the Faith Award, Imani, from the Juneteenth NYC organization in 2023. His journey of service and faith has inspired countless individuals to walk confidently and purposefully, grounded in love and guided by faith.
Throughout the years, Orel has not only welded metals but also the hearts and minds of everyone he connects with. Through his words, actions, and unwavering dedication, Orel leaves an indelible mark, proving that true leadership is born of love, humility, and service.

Guided by his favorite scripture, Micah 6:8
