Hercules was educated in the public school system of South Carolina and graduated from Dover High School in 1968. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in June of 1968 and served fourteen months in Vietnam from 1968 to 1970. After his discharge from the Army, Hercules relocated to New York City.

Hercules was employed by the NY Blood Center as an Allocations Technician for 17 years. He later trained for the Board of Elders and remains an active church member.

On September 16, 1972, Hercules married Rosemary Colclough, and their union was blessed with two children, Craig Richard Miller and Sandra Denise Miller. He pays tribute to his friend Elder Sydney Rudolph White with the quote: "I’m not all that I would like to be, but I am more than I used to be."
